Have you ever been to the store and realized that you could probably find the same thing for a better price somewhere else? In fact, a great place to start looking for some truly valuable, unique and best priced pieces would be at an auction. Auctions can be a truly magical place to find the best items for your home on everything from those old antiques to even real estate. Before you attend your first auction, it can be slightly overwhelming, especially if you are not sure of the process. If you follow along with a few helpful tips, your first auction experience will be exactly what you are looking for!
Early Bird- If you arrive early to the auction, you are able to slowly get the lay of the land, find a good seat and register. This will also help ease some anxiety you may feel so you aren’t rushed and can actually watch the entire process as people begin to gather when the time gets closer. You can even use this time to look around at other items you may be interested in purchasing.
Research – This may be an easy thing to not think but it would be helpful to research the specific type of auction you are planning to attend including what items are going to be sold so you have an idea of how much you are wanting to spend.
Ask A Friend To Help – There are no rules about having help along with you and if you are looking to purchase something that might be slightly out of your price range, like property or large heavy items like furniture, I would highly suggest bringing an extra person along who can help give you friendly information or help you as the auction unfolds.
Get Excited To Bid- You may feel a bit intimidated to bid on something but if you went to this specific auction for a certain item or reason, you’ve already mentally prepared yourself to go after what you want. The way to bid is extremely simple; raise your hand or bidder’s card when you want an item that is up for bidding. Make eye contact with the auctioneer to ensure that you both see one another and your intentions to bid on this item are clear. Another key point is listening closely to the auctioneer. This person is the one who determines the increases in bidding, so be 100% sure of the amount that is called out and make sure that specific amount is what you are prepared to pay.
A local auction company, Peachtree and Bennett, located in the Atlanta area is a prime place to start. They hold live auctions in the Scott Antique Market, Atlanta and at the Antique Galleries of Sarasota, Florida. If you aren’t local to any of those places but are still interested in bidding on something from that auction, they offer a phone or absentee bidding. In phone bidding, one of Peachtree and Bennett’s agents will be on the line with you during the live auction and will relay your bids to the auctioneer. In absentee bidding, you will inform us of your bidding instructions ahead of time and your bids will be relayed to the auctioneer.
Peachtree and Bennett also offers monthly auctions, which occur on the second weekend of every month, and are conveniently held at their prime location at the Atlanta Expo Center, also known as the Scott Antique Markets Atlanta. All merchandise is in house and available for viewing, as well as being featured in a descriptive full-color auction catalogue. Adding to the enjoyment of the evening, they offer an open bar and a complimentary buffet to registered bidders. Previews include every item to be auctioned and are held for as many as three days prior to the auction. Their knowledgeable staff is on hand to educate prospective buyers about items of interest and help them make an informed decision about their bids.
