Motheroftheworld.net had the exciting opportunity to chat with Food/Fashion Blogger and fellow Bloggers Like Me Girl(BLM) La’Shonda Woodard of FashionPlateKC. As a busy mom, stay at home, or working mom, it can become very difficult to find time to put together a fabulous outfit for girl’s night out, date night with hubby, or a local meet up with friends. Sometimes things can get so overwhelming with schedules, grocery shopping, sports activities, making lunches for the children, you find that you do not have the time to dine out at your favorite restaurant. However, at FashionPlateKC you are able to see what are the best eating places for you and your family, and at the same time get amazing tips and tricks for that perfect outfit and keep everything on budget. La’Shonda has fabulous outfit finds for day, evening, and special occasions too. La’Shonda’s expertise for thrift shopping and “great eye,” for fashion with a wonderful palette for delectable, and tasty food makes her blog an awesome place to visit for the busy mom.
I’m La’Shonda, creator and social media manager/blogger of FashionPlateKC. FashionPlateKc was birth out of a combination of things. I grew up watching a local food T.V. show; the host would travel from restaurant to restaurant trying delectable cuisines. As a small child getting paid to eat food was the best job ever! I dreamt of growing up doing the same, of course that did not happen. So I decided to create a blog, where I would try out local eateries in my area and blog about them. Food is not the only thing I love. Thrifting is my jam as well. Thrifting seems like the “thing” to do nowadays. It’s always been a part of my life. I recall my grandmother taking my sisters and me to local thrift stores and garage sales. Thrifting has evolved from purchasing items less desired by others to huge phenomenon. I look at Thrifting as a treasure hunt; my goal is to always find strike gold. Currently, I reside in a suburb outside of Kansas City, Mo with my husband of ten years. Together, we have two beautiful girls and a bouncing baby Huey puppy named Prince. Creating FashionPlateKC has been a blessing in my life and I look forward to what God has in the years to come.
MW. How did you get started in blogging?
LW. I noticed that I would always start projects but never seen them into fruition. I wanted to create something that I could hold myself accountable. In 2010, I begin to really learn about blogging. I thought it was amazing women created their own digital space to express themselves. I wanted to create that space for myself as a perpetual accountability project. I brainstormed things that I loved and two things came to mind: Fashion and Food. It wasn’t long thereafter; the blog was created in FashionPlateKC was born.
MW. How do you balance being a mother, wife, and Fashion/Food Blogger?
LW.This is a great question! I do not balance it all alone. I am blessed to have a loving and supportive husband / family who makes it all appear easy. Without their support, I would not be able sustain the blog.
MW.Can you describe your ideal reader?
LW. A girl who wants to “look chic on the cheap”. And is also a foodie who loves to experience innovative and unique food.
MW. Who is your biggest blogging influence?
LW. I have so many; it’s so hard to name just one.
So I’ve combined a list of my top blogging influencers:
Mattieologie – I love Mattieologie because she openly shares knowledge about blogging and her love of fashion/lifestyle. Also, her ability to connect to her audience is amazing.
Whitney Nic James – Whitney’s thrift style is amazing and her blog is very uplifting.
DeDivah Heels – This blog will have you coming back day after day to find out about great deals, plus she is a thrifter as well.
FashionDuJour – This blog has incredible style and easy relates lifestyle as if you two are best friends.
The Mommy Week – I love this blog! The Mommy Week creates the most mouth-watering recipes, sews amazing items, and her travel adventures will have you daydreaming of getting away.
Mrs.WrightWrites – This mompreneur does it all and makes it all seems easy. Her balance of lifestyle blogging and business will make you feel as if you can do anything.
MW. How do you decide what you will write about, blogging or otherwise?
LW. I keep a running list of ideas from brainstorming. I always keep a notepad in my purse when I’m out, I may see a store or eatery I want to blog about.
I also receive suggestions from friends and family of clothing stores and eateries. Lastly, I review current events, magazines, or simply things I love to spark inspiration.
MW. How do you combine food and fashion on your blog?
LW. It was pretty simple. I just combined my two favorite things which happen to be fashion & food. When it’s something you love, it’s not work.
MW. What thrift shopping tips would you give to a busy mom?
LW. Create a list of sizes for the family. When you know what size your family wears it makes shopping a breeze.
Go through your closets to see what items you may need. Shop for items you need first, then you can shop for the wants. After seeing what items you need, go through your closet to get rid of items you have not worn or don’t love anymore. It’s very easy to purchase a ton of items at the thrift store. I try to only purchase items that I “love”. If I see an item and I like it. It goes back on the rack. But if I pull an item and I love it – most likely it’s finding a new home in my closet. If you are new to thrift shopping: Shop the basics! Thrifting basic items such as a black pencil skirt, a white oxford, khaki pants, and slacks will create a basic wardrobe for future thrift shopping.
MW. What are some of your favorite restaurants in Kansas City?
LW.BBQ – Jack Staq BBQ and Woodyard BBQ. Italian – Salvatore’s Mexican – Cancun Fiesta Fresh and Sol Cantina Chinese – Bolings Burgers – KC Flea Market
MW. What restaurants would you suggest in Kansas City for family style dining?
Buca Di Beppo
