Mother of the World.net had this refreshing and honest interview with the amazing singer/songwriters Mike Grayson and Molly Reed, known to the world as the phenomenal Grayson/Reed. Grayson/Reed are a married couple taking the music industry by storm with their new song Fight for You. Along the way, they have inspired Christian parents and couples to keep their faith in God at the forefront of their marriage, family, and thriving career. Mike and Molly are a true testament of what it means to live faithfully, honestly, and to truly trust in God!
As acclaimed singer/songwriters in their own right, both Mike Grayson and Molly Reed brought a solid musical history to their relationship when they married in 2013. Grayson spent the better part of 13 years as the lead singer for pop/rock band MIKESCHAIR, with whom he released three full-length albums and scored five Top 5 radio singles. Meanwhile, Reed spent a few years as one-half of duo City Harbor and has become an in-demand songwriter, penning hits recorded by everyone from Marie Osmond and Amy Grant to Hillary Scott, Colton Dixon and Francesca Battistelli, among others. On their own, Mike and Molly shine, but together, they’re a powerful creative force to be reckoned with as they embark on a new journey, side by side, as Grayson|ReedMike and Molly met their first week of college as entering freshman at Nashville’s Belmont University. Over the next 10 years, the aspiring artists floated in and out of one another’s social circles, gradually building a unique friendship that eventually became a strong relational foundation when they started dating in 2012. The following year, they said “I do,” and two years later, they welcomed their daughter, Grailey.
When the couple initially got married, they were both devoted to their separate musical interests; but when Grailey came along, they realized that moving, literally, in two different directions wasn’t going to be sustainable for the long haul. Still, they wanted to honor their individual commitments, dreaming of potentially joining forces one day in the distant future. That day came sooner than expected.
MW: How did you come up with the concept for the song Fight for you?
GR: When Mike and I began thinking about writing for our record, we knew from the get-go that we wanted an honest song about marriage. We feel that in today’s culture, so many things are working against marriage and telling couples to “give up when it’s hard” or forget about the lost art of perusal. We sat down to write this song and were as honest as possible and just let the words flow.
MW: What marriage advice would you give to a newly or seasoned married couple to fight for their marriage?
GR: We are approaching out fourth year of marriage….so we by no means “know it all”….But if we had to say one thing to live by in fighting for marriage we tell people Don’t Write Stories!! So many times our tendency is to internalize our feels and thoughts and let them grow and fester into stories that we made up….most of the time the stories we write in our heads are in a negative light. So Mike and my goal is to say: “hey I’m writing a story that when you said that….you really meant this…..is that true?” and we will give each other the chance to clarify.
MW: How do you enjoy working as a married couple in the same industry? Have you experienced any major ups and downs on your musical journey.
GR: We love it! We work so well together and enjoy being together in this capacity. Their are for sure many ups and downs. When the downs come we have found that it’s in relation to the actual music business and not towards each other. There is something so special to being married and being able to share our gifts together.
MW: How do you stay grounded in your faith? How do you balance family, business, family, music, and parenting your daughter?
GR: Some people assume that because we do ministry for a living, that we have it all together and are “rock stars” in our faith. I have to be transparent and say that’s not always the case. It’s essential for us to have a strong community of faith at home surrounding us. We are involved in our home church and have an amazing group of friends and family who help keep us accountable in our walk with Jesus. The way we find balance in life IS to remain grounded. We make sure we don’t “overbook” ourselves and that we make as much time as possible for our daughter. Quality time as a family is what makes Grayson|Reed tick. It’s all about maintaining priorities.
MW: What is a typical day/week like for you?
GR: When we are home and “off the road” we are usually either writing songs or (mike) is working at church. We love providing new experiences for Grailey (our daughter) so we take walks and take her to the park! We love quality down time as a family or sharing a great meal with friends. When we are on the road….its go go go! A typical day consists of sound checks, radio interviews, playing a show, praying/talking with people. We get to see a lot of cool places and meet a lot of great people!
MW: How did you achieve your career?
GR: Being faithful in the small things, being patient in the trying times, being courageous in the unknown and trusting God every step of every day.
MW: What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in the Christian music industry?
GR: Enter into it knowing that even though is Christian music run by mostly Christian people….there are a LOT of imperfections and lots of ways it will let you down. We don’t mean that In a negative way, I just know that of people think it will be either glamorous and/or feel like a super safe place. Let JESUS be your center. Let Him be the reason for your music and why you do what you do!
MW: How important is image?
GR: In the mainstream market, image is key. In the Christian Market, its so much more about the message in the song and the song itself rather than the artist singing it! We are so grateful for that. Jesus didn’t care how you looked on the outside, he cared how your heart looked on the inside. It’s about sharing Him and who He is and what He’s done in your life….over sharing yourself.
MW: What is the importance of the connections you make? How do you utilize them?
GR: We like to believe that each connection with someone is on purpose. It’s essential to listen to people and love on them for our ministry. You never know who you are talking to and how Jesus may use you in someones life….to take the time! We often are inspired to write songs about the stories we hear too!
MW: What one word of power would describe you for 2016?
